Sprinkler And Fire Protection Installer | Trades Qualification and Apprenticeship Act | Designated Red Seal Trade
Description
Read and interpret drawings, specifications and fire codes to determine layout requirements
- Install clamps, brackets and hangers to support piping systems and sprinkler and fire protection equipment using hand and power tools
- Sprinkler system installers fabricate, install, test, maintain and repair water, foam, carbon dioxide and dry chemical sprinkler systems in buildings for fire protection purposes
- Install valves, alarms and associated equipment
- Use air or liquid pressure equipment to test systems for leaks
- Perform work indoors on residential and commercial buildings
Personal Qualities
- You may be required to work in cramped areas or at considerable heights
- You have the stamina to be on your feet for long periods of time
- You need to be in good physical condition to carry materials

Career Opportunities
- Contractors in the institutional, commercial and industrial sectors are major employers, as are maintenance departments of factories, plants and similar establishments
- Companies that specialize in fire protection are also employers
- The majority of sprinkler and fire protection installer tradespersons are unionized workers
Educational/Training Requirements
- The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 10; however, employers and unions may require Grade 12
- Completion of a 4 year apprenticeship program at 1,800 hours per year
If you have completed 7,200 hours of on the job experience/training and have not completed the apprenticeship program you may be eligible to challenge the Certificate of Qualification

Potential Earnings
- Apprentices progress initially from 40% to 80% of journeyperson’s wages over time
- Wages1 range from $16.00 to $38.60 an hour, excluding overtime, with journeypersons usually earning the higher end of the pay scale
Prospects For Employment
- Ratio for journeyperson/apprentice is 1:1
Financial Incentives
- Employers who employ first, second and third year apprentices can apply for the Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit
- Employers who employ first and second year apprentices can apply for the Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit
- Apprentices are able to apply for the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant
Apprentices may also be able to apply for the Tradesperson’s Tools Tax Deduction
